Bream fishing tips
Bream Fishing is one of the most under rated types of fishing. My dad used to go to Ireland every year just to catch them. You often see anglers on the side of a lake that are actually annoyed that they have caught a bream rather than a Carp! My dad would go a whole week in Ireland without catching a carp and not complain. I can fully understand that fisherman are really waiting for a 30lb monster carp to come along, but surely you shouldn’t be too disappointed with a bream taking your bait? Maybe it’s because they don’t put up much of a fight? Who knows… but all I will say is that I think the bream should be shown more respect!
Here are some tips to help you catch more Bream:
- Use lighter tackle! Bream are not the hardest fighting fish and often give up very easily. 4lb line and a size 14 hook should be perfect.
- A quiver tip is the preferred method for catching big bream, especially in larger waters such as the big lochs in Ireland. This allows you to cast further into the deeper areas of the lake where the Bream like to feed. It also gives a clear indication of when they are biting. The waggler is also a good choice.
- What bait will Bream eat? Bream are not fussy fish and will eat almost anything. This is probably why most of you reading this have caught a bream even when you were not specifically fishing for them. My preferred bait for bream is worm or a cocktail of worm and sweetcorn. These will fit perfectly together in a size 14 hook.
- Bream are a shoal fish that stick together. The chances are that if you have caught one then there will be more bream in the swim. They also like groundbait and this will definitely attract them to your swim and help keep them there. Keep feeding the swim regularly with groundbait so that they stay around.
